Bill - I had to replace the dip tube on my 12 yr old water heater and decided to also do the anode rod . After 12 yrs the anode rod was a bear to break free - had to use weekly spray of PB blaster, heat and a breaker bar and it took 4 weeks until the PB blaster freed things up - I definately ran the risk of ripping the anode threads from the tank. Ideally these rods should be replaced every 3 to 5 yrs, but seldom are.
Some would advise not to mess with a 12 yr old water heater.
So as far as removing the old anode - on mine there was nothing left except for about 12 inches of thin steel wire - the core of the anode, or the remnants of it.
Yoiu could likely buy a shorter anode rod or cut a 42" one to what ever length you can get into the heater.
Again there are pros and cons to trying this on an older water heater.
