OT: HDMI cables revisited

A few weeks ago I asked folks here about their experience with cheap & expensive HDMI cables. The consensus seemed there is no difference. So. I bought a couple $6 cables (out of five needed for my set-up).
Yesterday the input from my Apple TV went away. After an hour of port swapping, setting changes, etc. the culprit was identified as the cheap cable- everything works as before with a $17 cable.
I know, I know, one instance does not make the case, but maybe the crazy-cheap cable is not the way to go. I'm still not getting the MonsterCables for $78.
