EU countries use to subsidize health care comes out of the painfully high taxes paid by consumers, employees and employers. To boot, however, I would like to ad that from a somewhat impartial economic perspective, it made sense to bailout GM, Chrysler, etc. From a, lets' say, "moral" perspective (such as do they really deserve billions because of the way they do business), I think they should just go the path of evolution, and die in the tar pit they dug for themselves. Detroit has not only produced out-of-touch crap for the last 35 years, they also were prominent in introducing such foresighted measures as "planned obsolescence", the demise of urban public transport (earlier in the century - look at the history of the introduction of bus to replace tram cars), etc.
