Speaking of English profs, I'd borrow E.B. White's famous all-purpose rejoinder to such stuff: "Oh, shut up."
Last week I found on Border's clearance shelf a coffee-table book on the history of the automobile. Very interesting. Far from being merely boxy or quirky, for many years Saab provided a well-engineered, utilitarian, attractive alternative to over-the-top designs of domestic offerings.
Remember tail fins? Or cars with hoods and trunks large enough for landing a small plane, but teeny little passenger compartments? Or take a walk down memory land and peruse the advertising claims made for annual tweaks to domestic models. No wonder buyers looked for something less overwrought.
GM's problem has been self-absorption, complacency and entitlement in top management ranks. They wanted the big money and the perks. They wanted access to a full trough. They didn't want to make tough decisions, so they chose the path of least resistance. Just as every commencement speaker says at every high school commencement, we see where that path leads.
