I did not say, nor do I believe, that GM is now shuttering SAAB out of fear.
What I do believe is that GM recognized value in a small company's technology and so, absorbed it, without any real plans or concern for it's future.
Being as substantial as it is in the industry, brand loyalty is likely the reason SAAB was allowed to wither over time instead of being promptly eliminated upon purchase. Were it a software company, most people would no longer remember SAAB's name.
Regarding the current decision process, I am sure it is driven by the eleventh hour desire to shore up their bottom line as best as possible before the end of a trying fiscal year. Presently, any unfortunate resulting public relations can be damned, as they have shareholders, including a new and rather formidable one, to whom they must answer.
These practices, acquisitions and divestitures, and their timing, are key to how big corporations operate. It's business, and I understand that fully. But it certainly doesn't mean that I'm unjustified in identifying such aggressiveness as the cause of something that particularly displeases me.
