Read a lot of posts and speculation, here and elsewhere. I think GM's thinking is well revealed in "Who Killed the Electric Car?" and the failed sales of the other divisions. The Chinese Saab deal means that competing cars won't be sold in their primary markets. GM doesn't want their cast-offs to succeed, nor do they like innovation (other than OnStar ;-) ).
They've run the numbers and think that will cost them more $$$ to keep competitive brands on the road than shutting them down. GM has always had no qualms about putting people and brands out of work -- hence, most of Michigan is unemployed and has been staggering for decades. And they think when current leases are up on Saabs that those motorists will feel brand loyalty to GM, not to Saab, since they'll have a relationship with their dealership. But if it doesn't go that way, why lose clientele to Saab (or Volvo, Audi, BMW, etc)?
And I'm sorry to be a naysayer, but why think that a sale to someone/anyone is necessarily a good thing? Spyker probably will overstretch to buy Saab, if that succeeds. Maintenance could become more difficult than if GM does its orderly downsizing and honoring of warranties. I love Saab and would love to see it survive -- and will be sick when my 1998 900S dies -- but I'm not convinced that a sale, just to breathe life into the brand for maybe a limited number of years, is necessarily so great. If that happens, GM likely will wash its hands of Saab owners.
