Boeing Agrees To Purchase Saab From GM
Saab has been given a last minute reprieve from an unexpected source - Boeing. In the surprise announcement Chicago and Seattle based Boeing stated acquiring Saab is part of the companies desire to diversify its business.
Boeing CEO James "Jim" McNerney says "Saab is a company with a history in aviation. Under Boeing, Saab will move forward as a distinctive international luxury automobile. We will maintain most Saab operations in Sweden, however some employees may be asked to relocate to Seattle".
Saab was acquired by GM in 1991. While sales had grown in some years, the brand had fallen behind competitors such as Volvo, Audi and BMW. GM had announced its intent to either sell or shut down Saab in 2009.
Boeing is expected to utilize Saab technology in new Boeing products. Marlin Dailey, Boeing VP Commercial Airplane Sales, states "Saab turbocharging technology could improve the efficiency of the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, reducing fuel consumption by 20%. This could save airlines millions in fuel operating expenses."
The announcement also included the unveiling of a new marketing slogan for Saab - "Reborn From Jets".
