My "guess" is that it is not as simple as handing the keys to the Saab factory to the new owner and saying good luck. It is not that the new owner is buying a building with a bunch of production equipment, they are buying a business with physical assests plus a lot of less tangible aspects that will be critical for the new owner's success. The new owner is going to want the rights to use a lot of Saab technology going forward that GM currently owns, and perhaps GM uses some of this in their own cars now (such as the new Buick folks on this website say has a Saab Eco-tech variant engine in it) and does not want to sell the rights to some or all of it. Perhaps this technology would help the new Saab develop the next generation of Saab cars. The new owner is also going to want access to a lot of components that are made by the GM supply network, and the new owner wants to be able to procure these parts at competitive prices and at the proper volumes for the next several years to support production of that new 9-5 model. There are likely issues of how much existing Saab debt GM will assume for Saab division related liabilities, and how much the new owner will take with the company. These are the types of details that I guess the two sides can't agree on, and these are the details that the media is not being told about by GM or any of the potential buyers. Any other thoughts?
