What makes everyone think that "Saab" technology is still something located in Sweden or that now eminates from Sweden?
After GM acquired 100% of Saab, they fired a huge portion of the Trollhattan engineering staff, and transferred their functions, and the intellectual property of Saab (now owned 100% by GM) to the USA. In large respect, what was left in Trollhattan became more just a remote manufacturing site. Just in case there is anyone who missed it, there is a lot of unused auto manufacturing capacity all over Europe and the USA.
Does anyone recall the fact that GM had Saab and Opel factories bidding for the opportunity to manufacture the next 9-3? OPEL WON THE BID TO MAKE THE NEXT 9-3. Trollhattan was to whither away unless it could find new and different work to do. The intellectual property of the next 9-3 was located at neither factory, only the hands to put the vehicle together.
It was the same when I worked at a GM motor factory a long time ago. We made small block V8s, among others. GM had at least three other factories that could, and did, make the same engine. Our plant had to bid on cost, and quality, to get the work. If our cost went up, we lost out to Michigan or Ontario, and members of the local union were on unemployment. It was a great way to have employees within the same company have opposing interests.
Just my .$02.
