Better to go bankrupt?

Wouldn't it have been better for SAAB if GM were allowed to go into regular bankruptcy instead of being bought out and run as a zombie corp by big government? I don't know much about it, but it seems that the assets would have to be sold off by the court and then could have been bought by someone else. That way SAAB could have re-grouped and had a better chance of surviving.
