I went to work for a Pontiac dealer about the time they rolled out the Fiero. It was a great concept. Mid engine, great looking body, yet it used relatively mundane sedan mechanical bits (much like English sports cars). It had some really inovative things like plastic body work, etc. People absolutely loved them and literally stood in line to look at them. We had a big waiting list and sold every one of them for the full sticker price. Unfortunately they were so poorly executed that demand for them quickly evaporated. After 6 months of working there I was spending half my time trying to placate customers (all models) rather than making new ones so I left and got a job selling Hondas and VWs. After 4 or 5 years they did eventually did get all of the Fiero problems worked out, but by then the word was out and no one wanted them. This is typical of how they always manage to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. They had a big hit but couldn't be bothered with the details. I can remember several years ago a columist for Automobile was chronicling their many short comings and questioned how long they could continue to keep making the same bone-headed decisions. Now we know.
