I certainly wouldn't sell in a panic, there are plenty of good independents who can work on your car. If you do a little work yourself and have a good, honest mechanic you can get by for $500 to $1000 a year--most of which will be wear items. If you've taken care of your car 200K without any major (engine/trans) replacements wouldn't be unrealistic. The real issue here is the fact you probably won't get much for your car--at least not compared to what you'd save driving it another 80/100K. Re: the Outback, I own an '05 Outback with the 6 cylinder and like it a lot. The only reason I didn't buy a Saab is that I live at 9,000 feet in the rockies and really need all-wheel-drive. With the snow you get in Albany you could probably justify it yourself but I'm sure a Saab with snows would work just fine (no mountains).
