Carly's biggest problem was she had never run a business. At Lucent she was essentially head of sales and marketing. At HP her biggest flaw was the on-going increase in organization complexity she seemed to love. She continually but in overlapping orgs that became paralyzed. For example she combined global operations (things like supply chain and procurement which had been in individual business units like PCs or printers or servers) with IT as one large organization which was accountable to itself and not the businesses they supported. The best things Mark Hurd did when he came in was strip away most of these counterproductive organizations which increased accountability and actually led to people taking the initiative to achieve business results. Mark is an operations guy, he'll continue to squeeze costs out and the EDS acquisition gives him plenty of opportunities to squeeze costs out over the next few years.
