I'm gonna go out on a limb and say I actually kind of like the idea of the bi-folding rear hatch. I love my OG9-3, but I don't always want or need to open the gaping hatch all the way. For example, the clearance in my garage is low enough that the spoiler on my hatch will hit the overhead frame for the garage door if I let it open all the way. But you can't reliably open it partway because the gas struts aren't designed to hold it in that position.
It would be nice to be able to just pop open the lower portion of the lid to toss some groceries back there, or to bring home long skinny loads like lumber, yet still have the ability to swing the entire hatch wide open for bigger cargo. I'm not aware of other vehicles that have this setup, as the lower portion of your typical split tailgate folds down like on a pickup truck.
Naturally, I do still agree that this BMW is ugly overall. I already don't like their current grille and headlights because I feel they're too overstated, and with this one the flat rear end and squished rear windshield draw way too much attention to themselves.
