The only functional advantage I can think of for larger wheels is that a shorter sidewall is laterally stiffer, which quickens steering response, and prevents the sidewalls from flexing during cornering. This benefit is pretty much worthless on the street.
However, this comes at a cost of money, increased weight, decreased ride comfort, and risk of damaging the wheels from a pothole.
I still think slightly larger wheels look better (I'm in my 20s; I can't help it). I thoroughly enjoy the looks of my 9-5's 17" wheels, but can't understand those who fit the largest wheels possible for the sake of having the largest wheels possible.
Like high/low sills, sloping, cantilevered rooflines, this might pass.
