The CNN Money report this morning read like GM is definitely closing Saab. This report however leaves the door open a small crack. We're finally getting info on what GM is really think, which I think is helpful.
A key phrase is, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said that the U.S. automaker would press ahead with closing down Saab unless a new bid emerged that was "financially better for us than the wind-down."
In GM's world, a bid that they fiscally view is only as good as closing is a money loser b/c in closing they know what their costs will be. By keeping Saab open for business they do not know what their costs will be.
Another important quote:
"For years GM has been procrastinating when it comes to Saab," Lutz said. "I'm glad to see that for once GM is sticking with a decision to wind something down."
It's obvious that in at least the view of Bob Lutz the world has too many car companies and closing the money losers only makes the others stronger. He seems to imply that he would have preferred to close Saab and some other GM brands years ago.
