Thanks for the suggestions, and you have validated the "field work" we've already done. In the last two weeks we've driven a host of Subies, a CR-V, a Kia, a AWD Volvo... even looked at a Freestyle online.

As some folks mentioned the seats in the Subies weren't so good but we did actually drive an Outback XT. It was much nicer and more comfortable, the engine power was awesome, but it had no coolant and they wouldn't come too far off the $15k price. No thanks.

We drove all of the cars on snowy days and found that these Outbacks, Foresters, and Imprezas were just as easy to slide, or spin!, as a FWD car. That surprised me and I guess it reinforces the need for snow tires. Also, the regular 2.5 engine makes for one slug of a car unless it's mated to a M/T.

Unfortunately, for Outbacks, Legacys, Foresters and the CR-V the $12,000 ceiling seems to mean high miles and/or being in the 2002 build year range...

Will let the BB know what we decide, when we finally do. Thanks again.
