10-Year Parts responsibility Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Wed, 13 Jan 2010 08:51:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A lot of people talk about GM's responsibility to supply parts for 10 years after they shutter SAAB, but does anybody know specifically what that means legally? If I buy a 2009 today, will I be able to buy ANY part on the car 9 years and 11 months from now? If you think about it, there are some sub-components you can't even buy today. I'm thinking of something like the buttons on the 9-3SS radio, that at one time required the whole unit to be replaced before the buttons were available separately. Also, I don't remember anyone mentioning that the parts had to be reasonably priced. Would GM be within the law if it just added another zero or two to the price of every part? Could meet the requirement if they kept one of each part and put a price tag of $1 million on each?
Finally, what is the penalty for not providing parts? Sternly worded letter of admonishment from the Department of Commerce? Court injunction to restart the production line and punch out the dealer-only part you need? Class action suit by disgruntled owners where the settlement is a $10 coupon off on you next GM vehicle?
It just seems that actual "10-year" rule might not be the safety blanket that we all want to snuggle up into.
