What truly MAKES the DVR experience is the program guide. Without it, you're barely a step above the old VCR, figuring out what channel, what time to start, and what time to end. And if you want to record a series, you always run the risk of duplicating episodes, or missing that one on a "special night".
With the program guide (the whole reason behind the monthly fees), it's all point-and-click. Even a Caveman can do it, to borrow a phrase. You merely browse through the PG, then when you find something you want to record, you press a button on the remote. If the PG identifies the program as a series, you should have the option to record all, new, or one episode(s).
All gives you all episodes of a program. If they repeat an episode, it does NOT get recorded again. ***
New gives you the "new" episodes. This is based on the date of first airing. If you set this option today, Jan 19, 2010, then it will only record episodes with a first air date of Jan 19, 2019 or later. ***
One (or once) lets you record this one episode, regardless of whether you have it already (usually). ***
*** These functions are only as good as the Program Guide info! If the PG has wrong air dates, or episode numbers, etc., you may get dupes, or a failure to record.
And once you've recorded them, the DVR should organize all your shows alphabetically and by date (mine drops all episodes of a particular show into one folder). Not sure how that works without the PG info!
Mostly, for me, it works as advertised. I have a DVR built in to my Dish satellite receiver (Vip622). It records HD, and I can record three separate HD programs (two satellite, one over the air), and watch a fourth that I already recorded. I'd honestly never planned to have a DVR, but when I got my Dish HD setup 3.5 years ago, I realized there was all this great HD I was missing without a DVR, so I upgraded. I've become a fan of the DVR ever since.
There may be some DVRs that have a "free" program guide, I don't know. But I'd check it out thoroughly.
And if you're looking to record HD programs, make sure you very carefully research the possible connections, etc. so you don't end up buying something you can't use as you had intended...
