I used to adjust the SU carburettors on my Morgan +4 drophead coupé with a Colortune plug (though which you could actually see the colour of the combustion in the combustion chamber) and a cunning thingy made by, I think, Gunson which used little balls in a glass tube as a visual guide to the vacuum balance between the carbs. Any major adjustment involved changing the needles in the SUs.
Before that I had a TR5 PI (no adjustment without throwing too much money at a specialist) and before that a Honda S800 with *four* carburettors for its 791cc. I did successfully balance those once but hardly slept the following night while considering the plus points of ritual suicide.
My first 96 V4 had problems with its distributor: the base plate shifted about, altering the timing, till we sussed out the problem and locked it with a grub screw through the side of the casing. I fitted the '75 "Jubilee" that succeeded it with Lumenition electronic ignition but it still left me by the side of the road on many occasions. Probably down to the add-on Weber 28/36 DCD which flooded for a passtime.
As I said, happy days...
