I'm not sure why people get hung up on that. Audi/BMW are what cars in that segment are judged against, and to me, he's saying the new cars will be more competitive vs Audi/BMW (not necessarily trying to copy them, just similarly desirable). That can't be a bad thing, even if the price goes up a bit. As some have noted, the Asian manufacturers are raising the bar (though I still don't see them as at all comparable), so going for the lower end of the price range imho doesn't make sense... cost of labor is high in Europe so they have to lean more for margin than volume.
Around here, SAAB's greatest competitors are Subaru + Volvo. All 3 are about the same price, but SAAB is the cheapest after discounting. Subaru is vastly outselling Volvo, which is vastly outselling SAAB. Audi is doing very well here, as is BMW. I think if SAAB fit in somewhere between Volvo/Suby + BMW/Audi with Audi level fit + finish, they'd have something... the GM plastic + GM association hurt sales imho + contributed to the need to discount...
I think V.M. gets SAABs - he claims to have driven them extensively when he was younger. I think he gets they should be practical. I also have faith in the management + engineering teams in Sweden, who are actually going to make this all work...
