you would never have been able to make those comments without having tried it. The good ones make it look easy. And sometimes the ladies cute!
A few years back, they made the Olympic trial curlers take fitness tests - to much surprise, one of the best skips was suddenly forced to diet, etc. But the exercise program only made him even sharper.
Put it this way - curling at the Olympic level is within the reach of the Common participant, with enough hard work and dedication. Can't say that about some of the other sports, like say downhill skiing or skeleton. Check out Jacques Villeneuve, former Indianapolis 500 champ and F1 World champ, taking a spin at Lake Placid with Jon Montgomery, the Manitoban who just won the Gold medal. They pull 5 Gs, when even shuttle astronauts only get to 3 gs.
Secondly, in most curling rinks, the bar is right behind the 'house', so you get to have a brew and watch the 'action".
It is really a social activity for most, to shorten our long Prairie winters (right LesH!) but there are always keeners who need to prove they are better. Representing your club at the Tankard, or your province at the Brier (nationals) gives you lifetime bragging rights! And quite possibly an open bar....
