...This is a laborious labor of love.
After extensive researching I decided on the Plustek Opticfilm 7300 because of reviews of both it and the SilverFast SE software that comes bundled. The scanner also has a four slide tray.
So far, with about 50 slides done I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. But it remains a manual process, mostly because each slide seems to have some kind of quirk to it (and these are in impeccable condition). But I'm letting my standards slip a bit as I go along in the interest of speed. I'm scanning mostly color, some Kodachrome, some Extrachrome, some unknown.
If I could offer any tip with regards to how to configure scanning software it'd be know what your first interest is in with the scans. For me I wanted to get these digitized only first for preservation. Later I can resize, convert, etc. That means I set the scanning to the highest resolution the scanner will do (without getting into artificial extrapolation)and maintain the image size (of the slide). With this scanner it'll max out at 3600 dpi, but using math tricks go to 7200. That would be extrapolation so I keep it at 3600. This gives me ~4MB filesizes (.TIFF) and the actual scan takes 10 - 15 seconds. The tricky part is dealing with all the different filters and processes available to clean the image up.
