Japanese automaker Nissan and its French partner Renault are in talks with German auto giant Daimler to form a comprehensive tie-up.
Sources say the 3 companies are considering jointly procuring parts and purchasing materials as well as developing compact cars and electric vehicles.
They are also studying the possibility of cross-shareholding.
Nissan and Renault already have a capital tie-up.
The 3 firms are apparently aiming to cut costs and boost competitiveness in advanced technologies to survive the realignment of the global auto industry.
The proposed partnership would create the world's third-largest auto group in terms of sales following the Volkswagen-Suzuki group that forged a capital alliance in December and Toyota Motor.
