I know how they are built. They're good.
Judging from the shape, I'd guess your present fork is carbon. In case it hasn't already occurred to you: do not ride if the metal dropout fitting has loosened from its bond with the carbon. I ride a carbon bike with carbon clincher rims and have a carbon spinnaker pole on my racing sailboat -- but any carbon fiber reinforced plastic product can give you great performance and durability, But the yield strength and ultimate strength are close together. Unlike steel, which will bend (not just flex) and you can even bend it back, once a carbon fiber reinforced component is permanently bent, it's done.
