For both Saab and Volvo, part of the DNA that gives these brands their point of difference vs. others has been - safety, reliability, innovation.
Having lived in China for several years recently, I can tell you that these attributes are not something that is either well-known or respected in Chinese industry. Safety? When life is cheap as it is in China? (coal mining accidents, anyone?) Reliability? Chinese industry is built on cheap and quick - not a great foundation for reliability. Innovation? Please, this is copy central, not an innovation hub. Can all of these things change over time? Sure - just look at Japan - in the 50s, they turned out cheap junk. Now we look at them as world leaders (Toyota's present problems aside).
However - would I buy a Chinese Volvo in the next 10 years - no way. Even if production stays in Sweden the leadership, parts quality, trimming around the edges to get profitable (something Volvo has not been since 2000)all will conspire to degrade the brand from where it is today.
If you are a Volvo fan, buy one of the cars that are on the lot now and maintain it. You will not feel comfortable buying a new one for the next decade.
