Only double flair for a brake line Posted by Cmyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Cmyles) on Mon, 29 Mar 2010 17:02:48 In Reply to: Re: Compression fitting to repair leaking brake line?, John Myers, Mon, 29 Mar 2010 16:27:29 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Brian,
Most auto parts stores sell lengths of brake line pre-flaired with fittings on both ends. Disconnect the rusted pipe at both ends and take it to match up. There are a variety of different threads and fittings and a few different diameters. Brake pipe is easily bent to shape by hand. Compression fittings are a bad idea on brake lines as they aren't rated for the hydraulic pressure that can develop and they "bite" into the pipe. Brake lines are "double flaired" and that can't be done with a standard plumbing type flairing tool. I have a tool for making double flairs but I make brake lines for old cars a lot. You can't justify the cost of that tool if you're only fixing one pipe on one car and it takes a little practice to make good double flairs so you'll waste pipe. The pre-made pipes are relatively cheap just be sure to get the pipe with the correct threaded fittings.
