OT- Pond pump substitute?

Has anybody used a "utility" pump to run their backyard fountain or waterfall? I'm looking to replace our 670gph waterfall "pond" pump with the next size larger, typically 900gph-1,000gph. The pumps pretty much double in price when they make this step (from $60 to $150), so I'm looking for a less expensive alternative.
I found a "utility" pump for about $70. It pumps about 1,300gph & is rated at 1/6hp. The brand is Utilitech, sold at Lowes. The same company sells a 2,500gph 1/2hp "waterfall" pump for $200. Both pumps appear to be of similar design. The "warterfall" pump is way too big for our little waterfall, but the "utility" pump says NOT to use it for fountains or waterfalls.
Any thoughts or experiences?
