I've got a 1989 JD 175 hydro, over 20 years old and still going. It replaced a JD 170 (also +20 years old) that I broke the transaxle in (otherwise in great condition). These are 12hp Kawasaki powered lawn tractors that retailed in the $3k range when new. They are heavy and well built. Mine is only a 38" deck, but it cuts well and is highly maneuverable. My property is just a hair under 1 acre, about 1/3 to 1/2 is lawn, but with lots of sloped sections (no snow, though).

After 20 years, you can still get parts, used and new, and well-kept machines are going for the same price as new basic models at big-box stores ($750-$1000).

It depends on what your budget is, but if you're good with your hands and can and are willing to do your own maintenance, consider an older higher-end John Deere (LX 172/173, etc.) versus a new big-box model. There are several BB's for maintenance/repair questions just like Saabnet.

FWIW, my Dad bought the smaller JD 165 hydro new in the late 80's and it is still running strong. My brother and two of my brothers-in-law have JD tractors and love them.

If I had to buy a new one, I'd pony-up for the JD X300.

Good luck - JMJ
