When I finished my PhD, 20+ years ago, my wife bought me a Cannondale Criterium Series roadie which I still ride, always with thoughts of that time in our lives and how she shouldn't have afforded that bike for me then.

When she finished her PhD, a couple of years later, I'm sure I did something, but for the life of me, I have no idea what it was. Which tells me now, 20 years later, that it was probably a terrible gift.

So if it's stuff you're getting, make it something that will last a life time, like the Mont Blanc someone else suggested. And if it's a trip, make sure it's one she will always remember, a place you know she will cherish. I made up for my PhD gifting failure a few years later with a surprise 25th anniversary trip to Paris, which I believe she will always remember in minute detail.
