I have been searching for info about why I have had 5 tread separations on a '04 9-5 Aero Wagon with the OEM Pirelli P-Rosso tires: 225/45R-17 Pirelli PZero Rosso Asimmetrico XL. There has been a number of such problems on the 9-5 forum. But those who wear the tires out fast seem to avoid the problem. This indicates that the failures are related to time [liner permeability, moisture and oxygen] as well as miles. The rear camber on the 9-5's and the added weight of the Wagons seems to be a factor. There are reports of these tires blowing out at speed. The inner shoulder of the tire goes concave, but that is hidden from view. One report was that the inside shoulder had torn 360 degrees and the cords were visible - that tire had not blown out [yet], and was running rough. Some Audi's have had problems with this same tire. Other models of Pirelli tires have had tread separation. If you have a tire that seems to have gone significantly out of balance, tread separation can be the reason and you need to carefully examine the tire shape from both sides. The separation can be partial, so you need to look all around the tire perimeter. My neighbor had two Pirelli blow-outs on an RX-7, a light vehicle. High loads is not always an issue.
Nitrogen fills seem to have some real merit based on the article below.
I found the linked article that explains some of the technical issues.
I yanked off the Pirelli's and installed 225/45R-17 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric XL, which had stacked $100 off and $80 rebate. [We are now running these on both of our 9-5 Aero Wagons.]
One of the Pirelli tires that were removed was just installed, with 300 miles, now an orphan ;{
Pirelli is not responsive to these problems and TireRack is also not helpful and will only provide the number for Pirelli.
