it's better to be right to begin with. The linked article and the thread here point out how the process and thinking that go into creating an article make a difference in the quality of the story. And people's perceptions.
<Rant switch on>
The quality of writing offered up by many writer-wannabes today wouldn't have made it out of my high school English classes. And some of these folks even took journalism courses in college. Too many "writers" who show up on the web and even printed publications these days are clueless about accurate reporting and are careless with facts and even basic information. And they are lazy. They simply don't grasp the fact that inaccurate reporting is not just a disservice to readers, it makes them as writers look like fools.
I make part of my living writing for print and web publications, and have edited and managed four magazines. I also shoot and script a lot of news-oriented video that has a story wrapped around it. I do some of the writing and use a few known quantity writers because they know how to do it right.
Blogs and the like make it easy for people to spout off opinions and pretend to do some reporting, but when it comes to news, the facts are what's important and telling a complete story with the appropriate context. This is hard work, and even the big news organizations don't do this right all the time, and miss or leave out stuff on a daily basis.
The piece on the 9-5 would have taken 5 minutes of extra research, a couple of sentences in the article and an extra minute of video tape to tell the bigger story--and make it much better.
