A little late for adding my comments - but I would agree with your decision.
6 or 7 years ago, I tried to get my 3 boys interested in piano (and music in general). Got them into lessons but couldn't practice as we had no piano (actually used a small keyboard for the first year). In any case, broke down and bought a electronic piano (yamaha). I was very reluctant to do so as I did not want it to be a piece of furniture after three months. if I had access to an old upright, I would have used that.
So now, I have only one of the boys playing but I consider that a success - he is already very good at it - kids learn fast. I started taking lessons at 42 (5 yrs ago) and no where near the capabity of him but may be able to play some songs when I get to the old folks home.
The pianos may not be worth much, but if functional, they will be priceless to a student or family that would like to learn to play and will proably get them through the first few years of study.
