Hey Ho Dublin,
Michael Patrick Lynch born on the 17th of March, can’t get much more Irish than that, and yet I’ve never been to Ireland. Last year Sheena and Dermot of Maddocks BMW near Dublin came and visited and thus the groundwork was laid for me along with Kit to finally visit Ireland. The ultimate goal is the BMW International Rallye at Garmisch Partenkirchen with the very fun Lin and Prue van Coppenhagen from Austrailia, a perfect trip. I mentioned to John Hermann I was going and he said the Rallye was just a beer drinking fest, so I knew for sure I wanted to go.
Each of our previous two European trips, as well as two American trips and a month in Austrailia has been highlighted by riding with Lin and Prue. Hey Ho Corsica, Hey Ho Yakamo, Hey Ho Idaho have all been glorious trips with the van Coppenhagens. So the plan is to meet them in Andermatt Switzerland and spend the week before the Rallye riding the hidden valleys of the Alps. We’re taking a ferry from southern Ireland to France and then across France under Paris through Dijon and on to Andermatt. After the Rallye we’re taking the southern route back over to Santander in Spain for a ferry back to England and on to Dublin. Maybe we’ll get to ride a few of John Hermann’s roads in the Pyrenees. I know we’ll be crossing off quite a few passes in the Alps.
It’s been thrilling already with last minute arrangements for a bike handled by Paul at Motorcycle Rental Ireland. We’re riding a DOHC 2010 R1200GS low suspension with a high seat, the exact same bike we have as a demo here at the shop. I’ve got a tall windscreen, a little Touratech windscreen extender, a throttle lock and lotsa’ SDBMW and BMWOCSD decals to decorate with and it’s just 19 days riding so Kit thinks she can hack it as it’s not as comfy for two as our RT.
We’ve had the same rain suits forever now and are prepared for the worst. I asked Lin about riding in Ireland and he recommended a bus tour instead so we’re not spending that much time in Ireland, only a couple of days on the way out and coming in the day before we leave. Seems like we’ve bitten off quite a bit of riding that we wouldn’t have done if we had rented in Munich, but the chance to go to Ireland was just too enticing. We’re doing two overnight ferries, Ireland to France and Spain to England which we’ve always enjoyed in the past going to and from Tasmania and Corsica. The iPhone has a traveling plan so I’ll be reporting in along the way.
Kit has turned us into old hands at this fly and ride thing and hopefully we can look forward to the 19 Perfect Days From The Back Of The Bike article in RoadSigns next month. Personally we are blessed that things are going so swimmingly with plenty of business at the store (and support from Alan, Brian and the crew, thanks again to all!) to help pay for our adventure, healthy grandkids, and only the remnants of a cold hanging on. Belonging to BMWOCSD has enriched our lives so dramatically. We really couldn’t have dreamed it could turn out this well with more to come on the horizon as in - Hey Ho Durango Mexico October 2011.
We fly Sunday morning June 20th and return July 11th. We hate to miss Cuartro de Julio at the Kepple Kompound, but some business trips just can’t be avoided.
