It's (almost) always scenery vs. time Posted by Cmyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Cmyles) on Fri, 25 Jun 2010 14:24:37 In Reply to: Re: Colorado SAABers / Route Suggestion?, Dean, Fri, 25 Jun 2010 12:01:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Dean,
The more scenic the route the longer the drive (a general rule). Driving from Silverton to Denver usually takes me 6+ hours by way of 550 to 50 to 285. It might be closer to 5 hours if I just went straight to Grand Junction and then I-70 all the way but I haven't gone that way in years and I almost always see some reason to stop for a while along the way. Go up 285 and stop at Como for lunch, good restaurant, old roundhouse, spectacular scenery, funny little place.
Charmington to Durango 1 hour. Consider taking the back way: US64 (Main Street) West out of Charmington to the LaPlata highway (170) North, (it becomes 140 when you enter Colorado), turn right just past Breen onto 141 and that puts you on 160 East into Durango at Hesperus. Turn left at the big intersection and you'll be on 550 Northbound toward Silverton.
Durango to Silverton 1 hour up 550 or consider turning right at 32nd street in Durango (which becomes CR251) and picking up CR250 north (turn left at the T). Don't turn left on Trimble lane, just stay on CR250 and You'll cross the Animas River where Butch and Sundance jumped (in the movie) then eventually you'll come to US550 and go North. You'll go over Coal Bank Pass and Molas Pass as you near Silverton.
Silverton over Red Mountain Pass to Ouray 45 min's., Ouray to Montrose 35 mins., Montrose to Gunnison 1 hour, Gunnison over Monarch Pass to Poncha Springs 1 hour then 10 min's. to Saliva but US 285 goes North from Poncha Springs. Then it's roughly 2.5-3 hours up US 285 to Denver. If you are going to DIA be aware that you will have to cross all of Denver and DIA is well East of the City. If you insist on getting on I-25 then continue East from Saliva through Canyon City but at Florence take 115 North to Colorado Springs. It's kind of scenic and I-25 from Pueblo to Co. Springs is kind of dull (IMHO).
Driving US160 East from Durango is pretty scenic too but given the choice I use US50 to go East/West.
I'm assuming that you'll be driving all of this in daylight. If you are driving in the dark it may be better to stick to the big highways. There seems to be fewer deer and elk crossing big highways at night.
