Your wifes' Passat's front half is A4, the back half is A6.
Having put several hundred thousand miles on various VW's, I liked them. While i thought the interior FELT far better than a Saab, it did not wear like one. Maintenance is a must, as is buying a car with the best records you can find.
T-Belts aren't terrible, but having the correct VW tools are a must, as are patience. I have done belts on TDI's, 1.8T's and V6's, just time consuming more than anything else. The 1.8T and 2.8 VG tend to have leaky cam seals; while the 2.7T tends to fry itself and every hose under the hood by 100K. The 1.8t is also sludge prone. The 4.2 V8 is probably the best, priciest, and rarest of the bunch.
