Thats a shame. I'm not sure how the oil flow path thru the filter, but I'm guessing that the oil flows through the multi holes through the rubber flap (where the rubber flap prevents backflow?), through the filter and back to the engine through the centrally threaded hole?
If this is the case it may be ok to use them depending exactly where the rust is... if the rust is "not" by the centrally threaded hole, oil would be ok as it would be filtered before entering the central chamber. As BobS suggested, rust retains its magnetic properties, so a few magnets on the outside might help?
