I think this is the third time I've had my credit card info stolen in four years. All happened in Aruba where I traveled quite frequently for business. The last time was about two years ago when I was denied service in a restaurant on the island. Then I found out Capital One canceled my card suspicious of close to $3,000 plumbing supplies being bought in a Home Depot store in Gaithersburg, MD while i was thousands of miles away. At no time did I lose a dime I should add. Capital One always comes through. Or I should say it always spreads the losses among its users without them knowing it.
It happened again last trip I made to the island. One morning I got an email from Capital One to call the fraud department. Then I found out someone used my credit card to buy something online. The bank stopped it after the third purchase. So for a week and a half I had no credit card to use while on the island.
My credit card usage activities while traveling are very simple. It is either supermarket or restaurant. At the supermarket the cashier would swipe the card in my presence I think I could rule it out as a culprit. The restaurant is different. The waiter or waitress takes my card to process. So he or she has the opportunity to get all information including the security code to go shopping online. I believe this was what happened. At least this time it was. While the previous occasion my credit card was somehow duplicated so the thief went shopping with a duplicated card in Home Depot.
Someone suggested to me to note or remember the three digit security code on the back of the card and obliterate it after getting the new card. It seems to make sense. As point of sale transactions need no security code where online transactions do. I called Capital One about this. The bank naturally does not endorse such practice. But the agent said Capital One will not stop its usage with the card defaced but some merchants may decide not to honor it. Anyone of you did this?
