I'm not sure what towing costs where you live, but in NJ, just the hook up is over half of an annual AAA Plus fee ($105.00 per year for me). Anything over a few miles, and you're over the AAA fee.

What Anders said is correct. Having one # to call is a huge benefit.

A few years back, the trans on my 9kT broke, and the car would not move. I was barely 1.5 miles from home. I called the local police, and they could not even give me the # for a local tow company! Not that they didn't know any, but they were restricted from giving out any one number (appearances of preference, and all that)! I managed to get one through 411, but that was insane.

That tow only cost me about $75, but still, a mile and a half, and it was 75% of the annual cost of AAA Plus.

The tow I got after the Bear incident justified my paying for AAA for at least four years...
