Train? Plane? Bus? Friend with wheels? Gotta be a better way than renting a car. Unless you've got a co-driver, how do you drop off the rental? It's not a good idea to rely on the good graces of the seller, unless it's someone you know.
Best (and usually cheapest!) option is a friend with wheels. 150 miles one way is nothing. A day trip. Pay for gas & a nice meal someplace. Worst case, you spend5-6 hours in a car with your friend. Best case, 3 hours, then you have a "new" car...
A few weeks ago, I put over 700 miles on a car just to buy and move a car 90 miles. I had a friend co-drive with me. A couple weeks later, I took the train (NJ-Boston) & bus (Boston-Maine), and later drove the car back to NJ.
Twice I've flown one-way to buy a car to Florida, but in both cases I was pretty sure of the condition of what I was buying. Both times, the seller picked me up at the airport, but again, I knew them before.
And once, I drove to Pittsburgh. One weekend to look at the car & leave a deposit, and another week had a friend drive me out in his Z-3 so I could pick up the car.
