I have a Sonic wall router [$$$$] and no internal traffic goes through it at all. Internal traffic goes through D-link switches. The router only has two data cables. This takes router setup issues away from internal traffic.
[DSL/Cable Modem]<--->[router]<--->[High Speed Switch]<--->[HSS...]
D-link switches are cheap, there are lots of other brands as well. See link for D-link 2208
Some routers may not support giga bit port speeds and can thus slow down internal traffic. May or may not be an issue for you.
If you have printer problems going through a data switch, the problem is elsewhere. You can disable your PC's firewall for while to see if that is part of the problem.
