Re: VW/Audi timing belt - yup, ridiculous! Posted by Bill Homer [Email] (#3427) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Bill Homer) on Sat, 13 Nov 2010 06:46:29 In Reply to: VW/Audi timing belt?, Brian, Sat, 13 Nov 2010 04:37:45 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I believe that the replacement spec is 90K, not 100K, so you may be on borrowed time (your newer car may have a different spec than mine). On my 1996 Audi A4 V6 I had to replace the timing belt at about 75K because the thermostat quit working during a cold January - no heat and terrible fuel consumption. The timing belt itself may or may not last, but many of the ancillary parts around it will fail, i.e. the tensioner pulleys, the thermostat, and the water pump. If the belt breaks, the engine will suffer significant damage with pistons bending valves, etc.
If you do decide to do this yourself, be sure to use only the best quality parts and replace everything while you are in there. When I did the job at 75K I used a Graf water pump (German with a steel vs. plastic impeller); 30K later the seal on the water pump failed and had to have most of the job done again. If you have a V6 engine there are special tools required to hold the camshafts in place, and you can find these around the internet, or some mechanics (mine) can get away without using one. Blau Parts will rent the tools with a purchase of their kits, but I am skeptical of the quality of the parts they provide based on other bad experience with them.
