9 years ago (late 2001) I cross-shopped between:
1. a new 9-3 hatch
2. a 3yr old 1998 LS430 (Gen3 LS)
3. a new 9-5
I found the 9-5 to be just as quiet and smooth as the 3yr old LS, except for during wide open throttle, but then at that point you want the thrills of noise feed back and especially the handling response that the LS lacked.
The car became much louder half a dozen years later because the 2nd set of tires (high performance all season) was worn down and causing road noise. A new set of Grand Touring tires with good "quietness" ratings solved the problem right away.
Also, I noticed over the years that, the 2nd trip of the day makes the engine run much much smoother than the first trip of the day. So now when I start the car for the first time of the day, I wait till the engine idle speed to decline below 1000rpm before shifting car out of "park." It makes a big difference in terms of noise and smoothness for the first trip of the day.
