I've decided to be very un-British and change my tyres for the winter, now that the UK is in the grip of several millimetres of snow.
I think my 9000 will stay in the driveway and I'll use my van (which has seats in the back) so we have just one vehicle equipped for what looks like a hard winter in UK terms. My little Somerset village is often cut off for days at a time but the surrounding roads are cleared quite well.
My van is a VW Kombi wearing 18" wheels and for the time being I'm not buying a spare set of wheels, since my front summers are shot anyway - so four Vredestein Quatrac 3 SUV tyres have gone on. If that works out I'll buy some 17" wheels to take Pirelli Scorpion ST M&S which I know are fantastic for my kind of use - they came with the van when I bought it - just that the 18" ones don't come in an appropriate load rating, so I can't use them again on my current rims.
A quick test run this morning showed a huge difference in grip and braking. The Vredesteins show up very well in comparisons with summer tyres - they are literally two different tyres in one, and have a snowflake symbol like real winter tyres. Once out of the local snow on clear main roads they seem stable and pretty quiet. Will keep you posted as to how they work out.
