Multimeter recommendations water

A few years back I foolishly ruined a decent multimeter, but I haven't need one since then. I need one now for some pending work around the house and rewiring my '85 SPG.
I purchased a 29 range "digital" multimeter from Radio Shack a few days ago. At first I was impressed by the fit and finish of the device, but all that went away after I put in batteries and attached the leads to the multimeter. The device started a constant beeping at all the options on the selector dial, hmmm check the manual, oh doesn't ship with a manual, gotta download one from the RS website. No joy there as to why the thing keeps beeping, so back she goes to RS for a refund.
As most of these device are sourced from the far east these days I thought I'd check eBay. You can get a multimeter there for $1.11 "buy it now" plus $5.95 shipping from China. Doesn't look much different than the mid-range products from RS or the "Craftsman" line from Sears. Obviously something going on there that has nothing to do with producing a durable, quality product.
So after the too-long background here is my question: what would you recommend for a decent mid-range multimeter? The cheaper Flukes go for about the same price as the more expensive units from RS.
Thanks in advance.
Barry
