Well to be fair that isn't really the case anymore. Yes, previous versions of windows could be unstable and troublesome or demand considerable attention/knowledge to avoid such issues. However, since XP SP2, Vista and especially Windows 7, it should be completely stable. It's been over 5 years since I had my last BSOD and I get a freeze at most once a year. I've never had a virus or other kind of malware because I keep the OS updated and know better than to click on suspicious links, emailed attachments or popups.
Unix based systems are typically more robust, but (except OSX) they demand too much fiddling at setup to be realistic for people who aren't interested in computers. I run a unix based setup on my HTPC and it works great, but it was a bit of a PITA to set up.
