How much different is a Diesel vs. a gasoline engine? Perhaps this is the same question that GM asked when they tried to make their 350 engine into a Diesel, but I'm failing to see the big difference between for example a VW gas engine vs. their Diesel engine. Yes, the compression ratio is higher and stronger parts are therefore required, but aside from the block (perhaps), don't they buy most other parts from outside suppliers? And VW and Ford (and probably GM and others) already have the design worked out and a supply chain set up. I don't understand the scarcity.
