pay for as little insurance as you actually need. we don't pay for the insurance to cover repair costs of our cars (partly because they are both almost 20 years old + the insurance company largely has no idea of the value + would write them off close to the deductible anyway)... btw we also go with a little higher deductible... if you have a highly valuable car (in real terms, not sentimental) you can not afford to replace, you might want to have the collision on, but we don't... we can afford to replace if need be, and can probably fix anything worth fixing for a year or 2 of the differential in insurance cost (neglecting the cost of my time of course)...
one thing we do add though is the bit that covers us when we use rentals... your credit card may also do this, so check to avoid being over insured, but it was cheap and a huge savings vs the rental company's "insurance" (which is basically a cash grab + does not take into account your perfect driving record vs some other idiot's lousy record)...
it also pays to shop around, particularly to the "group" carriers (eg if you are a university grad)...
