The northeast seems to be more sensible about the use of salt. Here in Wisconsin, they salt while the snow is falling, after the snow has fallen, and even before it falls. The trucks drive around with their beds up, dumping salt, and their plows up, too. I watched a truck salt in this fashion when we had about 8 inches of snow on the ground. Now plowing, just salting. You end up driving in this thick, slick mush. It's far worse than hard packed snow. Snow tires, I suspect, are not tested in nor designed for this stuff, because who in their right mind would salt without plowing? <Rant mode off>
Our '88 9kt rusted out with perforation all around. Its final death knell was that a coil spring snapped from the corrosion. I've tried to stay on top of things with my '91 9kt, but it needs almost yearly attention now. Your good fortune, I think, may be related to a diminished use of salt in your neck of the woods.
