I had an 89 XJS coupe. V12. Even with the extra maintenance costs, it's a cheap entry into v12 land. I sold it dirt cheap when I got an E-type as I couldn't afford to garage and own both.
I too like the looks of the XJS coupe and convertible. I miss mine once in a while. It was solid comfortable, and got around quick. The v12 was revised several times since the E-type v12, but still got 11 mpg. I replaced the intake trumpets and put K&N filters in for 1mpg better fuel and way better sound. The straight-6 were after the Ford takeover and were more reliable and better fuel economy. That is why they have more favorable reviews. Jaguar is also known for making great straight-6 engines.
The XJS tended to be mostly all automatics too, something Saab is presently mostly guilty about right now too. Mine had a 3-speed GM TH that could be shifted at 60 and 100mph if I wanted. I think the later 6cyl ones might have had different transmission options.
